Letter to Count Marbois regarding George Washington's desire to save the life of André, who had conspired with Benedict Arnold in the surrender of West Point, in order to make an example of him as a traitor. Washington devised a plan with General Lee to have John Champe "desert" to the British Army and seize Arnold for execution. Russell explains the failure of the attempt and proposes corrections to be made in Marbois' account of the entire incident. Written at Paris, France. Enclosed are two engraved pictures of the desertion of John Champe, pages from a book giving the account, and a clipping of the account.

Lee was a veteran British Army officer who settled in America in 1773 and was appointed a major general in the Continental Army at the outbreak of the Revolution.
